You Know Its the Sign of the Apocalypse....

When a pregnant 17-year-old girl and her baby daddy represent "Family Values" and are featured prominently at the Republican National Convention.

Aww...ain't they cute. Holding hands and all.

The Four Horsemen are coming. You better get right with the Lord....

Digg!

The insanity is that everyone is mad at the media and the "public" for speaking on this girl. Now I do agree with Barack that children should be off limits in political campaigning, but Palin had a duty to her child to protect her first not depend on the Republican party to do it for her.

Had it been one of Obama's children, we wouldn't hear the end of "baby daddy."

HYPOCRITES!!!

Wow! In the United States, fully 70% of African-American children are born to unwed mothers, sired by shiftless young men, and you're taking potshots at two youngsters about to wed? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

Hi Kevin:

Really? 70%? I'm curious as to where you get your stats. Hit me up with a link to that one.

"Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!"

I guess that would be true if I wasn't a child of a two parent household (who will celebrate their 40th anniversary next year) and a married mother of a 2-year-old daughter myself.

But my issue is not with Britol Palin. I knew many girls like her when I was in high school waaaaaay back in the 80s. Unfortunately, many young people make bad decisions that affect the rest of their lives. My issue is the with the hypocrisy of her mother and the rest of the so-called moral majority in the GOP. Isn't family values not engaging in pre-marital sex in the first place so that you don't end up pregnant or worse with an STD??? How can you celebrate Bristol and Levi's decision to marry (if that indeed was their decision alone and not a political move) when there would probably be no wedding (at least not at 17) if she wasn't pregnant. That's not family values, that's trying to cover up your dirt so you don't look bad. I remember being 17 and you are not ready for marriage, let alone a kid. I've been married for a few years and some days I look fondly on my single years when I use to complain about not having a boyfriend. Marriage and kids are work and its work that many 17 year olds are not emotionally equipped to handle.

Sarah Palin and the rest of the GOP want abstinence only education in schools. But apparently that policy didn't work out very well for the Palin family.

I believe young people need comprehensive sex ed. Abstinence and birth control both need to be taught. Not everyone was fortunate to have a mother like mine who would talk to you ad nauseum about sex and birth control. My mother kept it real!! But she also let me take the sex ed class in both 6th and 9th grades (I'm originally from NC). She wanted to make sure I was armed with all the information necessary so that if I ended up doing something stupid, I couldn't say I didn't know. And the sex ed in school could give me more information that she may not have been aware of (like HIV) since she was married and out of the dating scene.

And let's be real, if Sasha or Malia Obama were 17 and pregnant, there would be so much talk about high pregnancy rates in the black community (your 70% stat) and how sex ed doesn't work and snide comments about Barack and Michelle Obama's parenting.

I don't believe Bristol and Levi are bad, immoral kids. They just got caught up and didn't think. But for the GOP to hold them up as a symbol of family values because they're getting married after engaging in pre-marital sex and getting pregnant, is laughable and hypocrisy at its worst.

Oh and Kevin, I don't know how old you are and how long you've been out of high school. But I remember the off the wall things my friends you to say about sex and how you couldn't pregnant if you did this or tried that. Most times I would correct them with "Well my mamma said...". Which would be shocking to them because their mamma's wasn't talking to them about sex at all. You wouldn't believe how many people got their sex ed from their friends. Would you want another misinformed teenager giving your uninformed teenager sex education???

Wouldn't it be better for you to find the statistics you're comfortable with publishing. I could provide you with several links, each worthy of objective review, but wouldn't your first impulse be to refute their numbers.

The truth behind this shotgun wedding can't be easily smoothed over, nor should it be given too much gravity. When isn't a marriage between young adults of this age not political? If we delve deeper into the definition we see that political expediency plays a role in many youthful marriages. In the case of Levi and Bristol we see that they may be acting according to the interests of status or authority rather than matters of principle.

While you're searching for the stats that make you happy, take a look at the numbers of young African-American men and their propensity toward contracting STDs. While on that hunt, look further at their disproportionate numbers concerning rape. It's really shocking what just 7% of the U.S. population is up to these days.

Kevin:

I'm not looking for stats that make me happy. I just want the actual stats. Is this information from the CDC, Health and Human Services or some other entity. I believe the number is high comparative to the African-American publication, I'm just want to know where 70% came from. If its true, its true, facts don't lie. I just want to see for myself. So if you know where to find the info, why not share?

Plus, how do I know YOU are not just cherry picking the stats that make YOU happy? But one stat I do know is that black people are more than 7% of the us population. According to the US Census, in 2000 "36.4 million, or 12.9 percent of the
total population, reported Black
alone or in combination with one or more other races." Source

See I provided the source. Its not that difficult.

Let me update my stats:

As of 2006 African-Americans make up 13.4% of the total US population (40.2 million). It is projected by 2050 we will constitute 14.6% of the population or 61.4 million people. Source.

Please forgive my spelling errors in the last post.

I must say, I'm really enjoying this...kinda reminds me of the political debates :)

I would like to see the stats myself...I've heard it was 70%, but I would like to see so Kevin, why don't you be a good blogger and share with the community?

Kevin Carlisle said...

The 7% represents the African-American male population.

@Marcus

The rethuglican slogan shouldn't be "Country First" it should be "hypocrisy first".
